About What’s the Plan Stan

What’s the Plan Stan seeks to improve awareness and understanding of the hazards we face in New Zealand. It also promotes emergency preparedness in primary and intermediate schools by providing teachers and students with the knowledge and skills to act in a safe manner when a disaster occurs. Students’ increased awareness and understanding may also prompt their parents, families and communities to be better prepared.

The 2009 revised edition of What’s the Plan Stan:

  • is aligned to The New Zealand Curriculum
  • incorporates an inquiry approach model
  • includes up-to-date disaster information
  • includes a wider range of practice scenarios
  • reflects current best practice of what to do before, during and after a disaster.

In addition to this website, What’s the Plan Stan includes:

  • a teachers’ guide, including unit plans, inquiry model and activities
  • a CD-Rom with activities for students and downloadable worksheets and unit plans for teachers
  • a poster to promote What’s the Plan Stan
  • an illustrated storybook containing five stories
  • an audio CD of the stories in the storybook.

There is also a version of the resource in Te Reo Māori, Kia Takatū.

Disaster activities and fact sheets

The following downloads include activity sheets and homework ideas for different types of disasters that you can use as part of the unit plans or as one-off lessons. Each file also contains a fact sheet and information on what to do before, during and after that type of disaster.
