Kia Takatū is an initiative which supports kura and bilingual schools to promote disaster preparedness. It gives 8-12 year old students the knowledge and skills to act in a safe manner when a disaster occurs.

We have developed Kia Takatū with the help of a working group of representatives from the Māori community to provide materials and templates in Te Reo Māori. These are designed to be used in conjunction with the English What’s the Plan Stan resource.

The Kia Takatū materials include:

  • Kia Takatū resource book for teachers
This resource book in Te Reo Māori contains:
    • material and templates that are for students or their parents/whānau
    • information specific to the Māori community
    • five stories about our disasters and what to do
    • a glossary of terms.
  • Kia Takatū CD-Rom
The CD-Rom contains a PDF of the Kia Takatū resource book which can be printed to produce more copies. The CD-Rom also includes selected sections and templates for printing as PDFs or cutting and pasting as Word files.

You can copy the files from the CD-Rom onto a school intranet if you wish to make them available for teachers to use in their lesson planning.
  • Audio CD with stories in Te Reo Māori
This is a new resource for children to listen to disaster stories in Te Reo Māori. These stories provide a Māori-world view of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunami, floods and storms. Each story concludes with information on what to do before, during and after a disaster.

The audio CD is suitable for younger listeners as well as the target audience of 8-12 year olds.

Teachers can download PDF and Word versions of the following Kia Takatū resources:

If you have a broadband connection, you can download the entire Kia Takatū CD-Rom for PC. This ISO image file contains all the data from the Kia Takatū CD-ROM, which can be downloaded and burned to a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc. You will need a CD burner and CD burning software to do this. The exact steps required to burn an ISO image to CD will vary depending on your software:
